One of the best child performances I’ve scene in a while.
Final shot is so good it kind of ruined my night!
Really admirably avoids saccharine pitfalls, remaining very pragmatic about its violence without sacrificing sentiment or humor, and crucially never denies its intrinsic, inevtiable fatalism. Egerton has maybe never been better but the kid is fucking terrific. Last beat is a real killer.
Taron Egerton has been building an impressive resume since he broke through the scene with Matthew Vaughn’s “Kingsman”—one of those movies that seemed to come out of nowhere and wowed many of us with its riff on the spy genre and gifted us with some pretty memorable scenes. Now, the film wasn’t exactly the best showcase of his acting chops, though he still brought a good amount of charm. But there was the danger that he could have easily become a one-hit wonder. Recently, he was in Apple TV+’s “Black Bird,” which allowed him to show off his skills and demonstrated that, while I still wouldn’t go so far as to say he has Oscar potential, he’s not far off.…
Taron Egerton has never been better. But the entire film rests on the tiny shoulders of Ana Sophie Heger and she steals the whole damn show! For someone so young she delivers a truly remarkable, totally devastating, highly memorable performance!
Great music, thrilling moments, beautifully filmed. (Polly running across the desert while a huge gun battle rages below is one of my favorite shots of the year.) And having a major soft spot for stories about dads and their daughters, had me misty eyed a time or two. (The haircut scene really got to me.)

The tense but tender story of a criminal dad who reunites and/or runs off with his child at a crucial point in both of their lives, Nick Rowland’s “She Rides Shotgun” is the kind of movie you’ve seen so many times before in one form (“Paper Moon”) or another (“Leave No Trace”) that it really just lives or dies on whether it gets the characters right.

I'll be the first to say that it takes a little while to get going, but once it's rocking and rolling...WOW, I was locked in!
Taron may be at his best here (films-wise) as a recently released ex-convict who's desperately trying to protect his daughter from his own mistakes. I thought it was beautifully filmed with great music and lots of tension and I think both the thriller and family relationship elements worked really well. But my two biggest takeaways are that - as bold as it may sound - this may contain one my favourite final sequences and final shots EVER, it was just so heartbreaking and hard-hitting, and has one of the best child performances from Ana Sophie…
