I’m feeling much better, but I still need to finish all these Amicus anthologies so I can make a ranked list and offer further proof unto the world that I am, in fact, a complete and shameless nerd.
This one is maybe not as good as all the others, but don’t get me wrong because it’s still very entertaining. The wraparound story is probably the weakest one so far, but since it has Peter Cushing it’s not a total loss. I loved the segment with Donald and Angela Pleasance because damn, I sure didn’t see that amazing ending coming. In the Amicus anthology From Beyond the Grave, Peter Cushing is the owner of an antique shop dealing in unusual items. Over the course of the film, the plight of four customers is followed after they purchase an item from the odd little business. While the production values are competent and the acting, for the most part, is passable, the movie doesn't really work all that well for a simple reason – for a horror film, there is nothing remotely scary in any of the four stories. Instead of creating suspense or generating a jump scare or presenting a Rod Serling-like twist, the movie is only successful in making the viewer roll their eyes and wonder what the point of it all is.
David Warner starts hacking up prostitutes because his mirror tells him to. A little resistance? No? How about just doing it a little cleaner? No? It's David Warner, man, what can you do. He needs his plastic covering costume from Time Bandits. Ian Bannen gets with Donald Pleasence's daughter because, even though she's super freaky, she also says she'll obey his every command. Margaret Leighton is a goofy psychic who tries to exercise an elemental from a dude's shoulder. and finally, Ian Ogilvy installs a door to his stationery cupboard that opens onto some evil dude's study. Horror anthology from the venerable Amicus Productions, comprising four shorts whose underlying message is 'dishonesty doesn't pay'. Encounters with cursed artifacts abound. Peter Cushing plays the antique store owner whose customers mostly meet with terrible fates as a result of their double-dealing the sickly old proprietor.
The first story, centred around a haunted mirror, is the pick of the bunch, and raises the question of why everyone's first reaction on seeing an antique mirror is 'let's hold a seance!'? Never goes well... blood-letting inevitably ensues. Donald Pleasance is on good form for the second as an old soldier reduced to selling matches outside a train station. From Beyond the Grave is the last of the anthology horror films that Amicus produced, and probably the one with the most bizarre set of stories! Peter Cushing helms the wraparound as a dealer of cursed antique items that bring bad luck to anyone silly enough to try and rip off the store. The first story has a real Hellraiser vibe about it, and focuses on David Warner killing women to try and satisfy the bloodlust of a haunted mirror. This one is thick on atmosphere and features a real descent into madness - with both the central character and the location on a downward spiral. Life lessons learned from From Beyond the Grave
1. Don't try to cheat, swindle, or steal from a creepy old guy who runs a mystical shop of cursed trinkets.
2. Don't do séances in front of creepy old cursed mirrors or you'll end up feeding the ghost of Abraham Lincoln prostitutes.
3. Never follow Donald Pleasence down a dark alley in a horror film.
4. When an old psychic women stops you on a train to tell you some freaky stuff, you should listen.
5. Don't skimp on your closet doors. Go modern, or Beethoven will try to steal you soul and you'll have to turn him into a skeleton.
Peter Cushing owns an antique shop. The people that linger near his shop or buy from him become the subjects of individual stories, which tie the whole anthology together.
David Warner buys a mirror with a spirit inside that demands blood; A man with an unhappy home life steals a war medal to ingratiate himself with a street peddler (Donald Pleasence) and his daughter who are up to voodoo shenanigans; A businessman switches prices to get a snuff box on the cheap and in return gets an elemental spirit on his shoulder to ruin his life; a writer lowballs the asking price on an antique DOOR that can of course lead to nothing good; A burglar who’s been hanging around…
Kleine, aber feine Anthologiensammlung der Produktionsfirma Amicus, dem nicht minder guten Nebenbuhler der famosen Hammer-Studios.
Die vier Geschichte sind zwar vom Erzählerischen her nicht sonderlich originell und lassen die typische Fiesheit der Tales from the crypt-Stories schmerzlich vermissen, werden aber durch die versierte Regie von Kevin Connor gekonnt atmosphärisch und very british in Szene gesetzt.
Auf alle Fälle ist es jedoch immer eine Freude, solchen Größen des Genres wie Peter Cushing, Donald Pleasence, David Warner und einigen mehr beim Schauspiel zuzusehen.
Zwei Highlights, eine doch unerwartete Schlußpointe und, auch unerwartet, sogar ein Happy-End sind unterm Strich ja auch nicht so schlecht. Man hätte für die Geschichten jedoch jeweils einen anderen Schriftsteller nehmen sollen, um etwas mehr Abwechslung reinzubringen.
Dennoch kann hier eine klare Empfehlung an die Fans altmodischer Kurzgeschichten ausgesprochen werden.
Achja, legt euch lieber nicht mit Antiquitätenhändler an.
Für Fans des gepflegten Oldschool-Grusels und Freunde von kleinen Happen.

Kicking this off with the best story of the bunch, excellent start! The first segment sates my slasher bloodlust in a short that is unusually bloody and violent for an Amicus production. A man in a mirror looking for some fresh souls, a simple enough story played out in horrific, bloody fashion. Nothing good ever comes from a spontaneous séance session... nothing! FEED ME BLOOD!

The following is just gonna be me gushing uncontrollably about how much I loved this, so you've been warned! First thing I loved: opening credits over moldering crypts complete with unearthly screams and moans. You have my attention! Second thing: Peter Cushing of Temptations Limited, fine purveyor of antiques and cursed objects. I love Friday the 13th The Series and Needful Things (and Peter Cushing), so this wraparound was right up my alley.

The last of the "Amicus Seven" anthologies that these Hammer-competitors produced over a decade of activity. The segments are based on short stories by Ronald Chetwynd-Hayes, once called "Britain's Prince of Chill" in his heyday.
My favorite of the four vignettes is "An Act of Kindness", wherein Donald Pleasance and his (real-life) daughter Angela play enigmatic characters who befriend a lonely, henpecked gentleman. The twist ending on this one blindsided me though there were tons of red flags that things were not as they seemed. Marvelously creepy, especially Angela Pleasance's performance.

OK, one of these names and reputations is not like the others, but this movie was the big test that my daughter set herself - a genuine scary movie (by her standards) on Halloween. Could she watch it before bedtime and not keep me up all night with frequent nightmares? OK, maybe that was my objective more than hers. Anyway, she was going OK.
