The stunning success of Conan the Barbarian caused a mini rejuvenation wave in the swords & sandals subgenre within the greater 80s action golden age. Released just the following year, this really might be the first.
And GOOD LORD is it a knockoff. Whole scenes feel directly lifted. The opening attack on the village, the buddy walk through Shadizar, the orgy raid: even the sets & settings are incredibly similar. Did they re-use the sets?
While probably first in the flow from which Conan is the wellspring, sadly, it's not the best. While some of the stunts are competent (especially those on horseback, respect given where it's due), that 80s action never manifests. These sword fights are sincerely closer to the quality found in a high school play. They're distractingly bad, to the degree that they repeatedly took me out of the movie.
This isn't all bad, but it's really only recommended to those who love the subgenre.
