NEON, I am begging you, PLEASE stop marketing every horror movie you distribute as the “scariest movie of the year.” You are just setting yourself up for colossal failure. After the Longlegs marketing debacle and resulting discourse, at least that movie had some scares, but Presence’s marketing is doing it a grave disservice as general audiences are probably going to largely hate this due to how misleading the marketing campaign has been. My beef is with the marketing department because going into Presence expecting to be terrified is setting yourself up for 84 minutes of disappointment. I genuinely love that we live in a universe where Steven Soderbergh can say things like “I want to make a movie that’s shot entirely on an iPhone” or “I just want to make a movie using completely non-professional actors with no script” or “I just want to make a movie shot entirely from the perspective of a ghost in a house” and people will give him money to do it.
