I don't know what I expected from this spiritual sequel to Smoke Signals, but I didn't expect Colin Mochrie talking about 19 year old cock or a man getting shit hosed off him
I went to the premier for this movie tonight at the Metro Cinema. It sold out all 500 tickets and it was so amazing to see so many natives all together to enjoy a film made by us and for us. A comedic and satirical take as an unofficial sequel to the iconic Indigenous film Smoke Signals.
Hey Viktor! is smart witty and hilarious. Sometimes relying on a lot of crass humour the jokes land and the movie is so enjoyable. Cody Lightening is a comedic genius. I’m excited to see what he does next. It so nice to witness a cult classic debut in real time.
Watching a movie with a scene set in the very theatre in which you’re sitting is peak meta-cinema
there’s one shot with fire and explosions in the background, and the camera operator absolutely killed it. they should’ve operated the entire movie.
true albertan-indigenous cinema right here. i’ve never felt like a movie was made more for me in my life, the characters, humour, story, and literally everything was right up my alley. mad props to cody lightening (coolest name ever) and the 2nd AC. absolutely killed it. everyone watch this movie, it’s coming to theatres 🤫🤫
Only knew about as much with regards to the fact that this is a film that carries on the legacy of Smoke Signals, a film that I've yet to see - but probably will sooner. That having been said, I did find this film to be very funny, even though it didn't quite get anywhere near laugh-out-loud qualities within the moment. But I think that Cody Lightning really found his shine towards the second half of the film, especially as it takes the angle of a self-deprecatory artist looking back on a legacy that he feels like he should have been able to make for himself.
Cody Lightning himself is also just so much fun to watch at the center…

Q&A with cast and crew
A resounding victory for indigenous filmmaking. I think I just witnessed the birth of a new cult classic.
The charisma just oozes out of Cody Lightning. He truly shines in this project. I see more screen time in his future for sure after this. Hell, give him his own native Letterkenny spinoff. The dude would fit right in.
I did notice a few small technical issues that could be smoothed over in another pass through the edit suite like echoing audio tracks in a couple scenes, flash frames, and some stutters, but you are so absorbed in the narrative that it hardly matters.
And what a crowd! At…
Look, did this movie need a tasteless and antiquated gay porn punchline? Probably not. But aside from its tendency to occasionally drift away from humour strongly rooted in character and social commentary towards dime store frat boy antics, I think this movie -- made by a lot of pals from Edmonton -- is an incredibly worthwhile entry into the pantheon of mockumentary-style comedies, with genuine heart at the end that manifests in unexpected and hilarious ways.
so stupid but also so hilarious and bold and meaningful and earnest, totally blew my expectations away. at the q&a cody lightning said he has a 4.5 hour cut and honestly i would watch it...release it cody...
Sooooo glad they made a meme out of the wig from Smoke Signals; it deserved to be memed.
I do wonder how much of "Cody" is like the real life Cody. Can't say obviously, but I can definitely say that he's a hilarious writer; some of the bits had me dying of laughter and he makes good use of the mockumentary style.
I can see him taking best actor in a comedy this week for the Canadian Screen Awards and maybe even original script, even though technically is it original? *insert that for legal purposes meta joke*
But overall really glad I watched Smoke Signals and this.
Don’t get some of the reviews on here. I had such a good time. The comedic timing is on point (“…I’m white now”). It’s especially impressive in the rate in which it’s zinging jokes, line deliveries and scenarios around (“yeah, he said sneak around back!”). It’s obviously quite abominable, and I’m biased already loving a lot of its influences (Best in Show, Trailer Park Boys, maybe Between Two Ferns: The Movie) but I think this is really fucking funny and really well made
“Look at that forehead, that’s a Cherokee forehead.”
