Ethan’s review published on Letterboxd:
It’s a moment.
Not a dream. Not a passing thought.
A moment.
The moment you look at them and realize.
That everything after this moment will be painful.
That you are setting yourself up for failure and sadness.
That they will take up all the time you have.
You won’t eat. You won’t sleep. You won’t think. Not without them.
But that you were never truly alive before.
And that you will never be the same.
The moment you look at them and realize.
You’re. In. Love.
CAPPIE
You didn’t have the moment the first time you saw them. Your friend actually had the moment instead, and you were fine leaving them to it. After all, you were in a relationship already. Then, without warning, it happened. You had the moment with the most inconvenient person at the most inconvenient time. You’ll end your relationship and ruin your friendship if you try to be with this person. But the moment is impossible to ignore, and trying to do so will only ruin yourself. Even though the struggle can’t have a perfect ending, you’ll always be doing the right thing if you protect as many people as possible.
MAGGIE
The person you had the moment with also had it with you. Something like that is rare, and should be celebrated. However, someone else had the moment with you: your best friend. Even though it’s not your fault that you don’t return their feelings, you feel guilty for not having the moment with them. You can’t pursue this relationship without devastating them, yet you can’t abandon your dreams just to keep them happy. You don’t want to lose either of them. But when two people have the moment with you, you can only pick the one where you felt the moment.
RINA
You probably had the moment years ago. You must’ve been filled with excitement. But time has passed, and nothing changed between you. You’ve accepted the fact that you’ll never be more than a friend to them. And yet, there’s a part of you that never gave up hope. There was always this small chance that they felt the same way, and that you could be together just like you’ve dreamed. Your constant back-and-forth between acceptance and foolish hope feels like it will never stop, but one thing will always remain true; You will never stop caring about them.
LUCAS
You had the moment the first time you saw them. You think they felt it, too. They soon become your best friend. Finally, a person who likes you for who you are. You would do anything to keep them. You lie about yourself. You hide your faults. You put yourself in danger. All to prove yourself worthy of their love. But they never had the moment with you. They don’t want to be anything more than your friend. And you have to watch as they have the moment - your moment - with someone else. Even though you’ll still have them as your friend, you can’t recover from the heartbreak.
Lucas portrays love in all its forms.
Its beauty,
its bittersweetness,
its desperation,
its passion,
its unrequitedness,
its moments.
It shows what it’s like when your love is hurting someone.
It shows what it’s like when your love isn’t reciprocated.
Most importantly, it doesn’t end traditionally, where everyone ends up with who they want.
It doesn’t have to.
Lucas shows that being rejected doesn’t mean you can’t have a happy ending.
Watching this movie was the longest moment I’ve ever had.
