Another simple yet powerful road indie drama from Vinothraj, one that showcases how the patriarchal-casteist-societal power structure incarcerates a women and her freedom. As much as the events feel satirically laughable, to think about our evolution as a society and for a person to live in such a plight makes it as horrific. Loved all the metaphorical and insightful touches; be it the rooster itself, juxtaposed kid character, Maanuthu Mandhayilae song or that little girl, wide nature shots and the bull. Though the open ending felt abrupt, it justifies the non judgmental narrative and leaves to the viewers to ponder upon their overall journey and intended direction. You know the director has won as he was able to convey the collective issues faced by woman through a lead who doesn't utter anything apart from just a dialogue and a chicken with its legs tied. The blatant sexism, castism, honour , pride,patriarchy and misogyny is on steroids here which made it a disturbing watch, yet it is so important to be addressed.

Apart from the few spoonfed dialogues and two symbolic and obvious shots used to portray the state of Anna ben and that of a rooster the movie is magnificent, pretty sure he wouldn't have included those spoon fed stuff at will cause there might be people who still won't get it .

Kottukkaali, a road movie , journey of family who goes to a shaman to fix "possessed" girl, to marry her off. The journey, filled with various motifs, conflicts and opinions, forms the crux. Kottukkaali incites plenty of such thought. It’s a departure from the usual cinema we consume, whose elements dictate our responses. "Why did Vinothraj cut to flowing water?" is the instant goosebumps reaction I had to the above shot while watching Kottukkaali in the theatre on day 1, nearly in the same vein as the iconic "Why did Ozu cut to a vase?" in Late Spring!
