Chamkila you have to stop!
You sing too naughty. Your swag too different. Your bitches too bad. They'll kill you, Chamkila!
(This is a legit quote in the movie)
Hollywood has "Oppenheimer", Bollywood has "Chamkila".🙌
*A delicious treat for Cinephiles/Audiophiles.
*One of the best biopics made in Bollywood.
A neatly crafted musical biopic that does good justice in portraying the life and legacy of Punjabi musical pop star Amar Singh Chamkila. It is as insightful, as festive and as tragic. Though Imtiaz depicts the politics of art and the spirit of an artist captivatingly, wish he had dug deeper into his socio cultural identity as it could have added more emotional weightage and clarity towards the conflicts, in turn aiding more in rooting for its lead character during both highs and lows. It does feel a bit disjointed at places, however the well written dialogues, exceptional music and fantastic performances by Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra make it a worthy watch.
"A Film by Imtiaz Ali"
this line gives me sukoon (peace, relief, comfort) that I am into the cinema. I love his filmmaking. He is back and how.
The Rockstar-esque film-making by the team Rockstar went well. Many moments remind you that you're watching Rockstar but positively.
The cast and performances are solid. Diljit Paji, you're becoming strong day by day.
The music is soulfully energetic, bgm is excellent.
Listening to vintage Mohit Chauhan and AR Rahman's singing took me down memory lane.
I'm gonna rewatch this tonight.
One of the best films out of bollywood in a LONG time.
Had the pleasure of watching it on a big screen today and I am so grateful because the experience was such a joyful ride.
One of the best paced films I have ever seen. Every moment, dialogue, visual had me engrossed. The mix of animations is genius. The direction is so brilliant, no one else does it like Imtiaz Ali.
Special shoutout to my most talented mother for the edit of this film. I may be biased but she has absolutely killed it and this is her best work yet.
The music is SO SO good. Diljit is so damn mesmerising. It’s only the first half of 2024…
that scene where women of all age groups end up bonding over chamkila after hating on him is so goated really shows you the chokehold this man had over commonfolk.
maybe that's what music is all about, giving a reason for people to escape from all the trickery, deceit, lies, social norm and forced prejudice that life throws at them. Absolutely stunning performance by Diljit.
As an Imtiaz scholar, this is strangely the least and the most Imtiaz Ali film at the same time.
The whole time while watching this movie, I couldnt help but think that this was something special.
One of the finest movies to come out of Bollywood in a really long time. Diljit Dosanjh is next-fucking-level. Parineeti Chopra was surprisingly great as well.
Peak Imtiaz Ali is so back.
(real shoutout to AR Rahman, Irshad Kamil and the editor of all of Imtiaz's films, Aarti Bajaj also)
WHO DECIDES WHAT WE GET TO HEAR?
Imtiaz Ali's most political and different film yet. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to connect it with rockstar. The character, driven by pure passion and nothing else, will meet an unpleasant end. But here, the end comes first and then the journey.
The film takes you to a personal, lived-through journey of Amar Singh Chamkila, an unfortunate kid growing up in a Punjab that offers him fights, violence, perversion and what not. As he grows up with these experiences but with a god given talent of music - he is bound of make a cocktail of expressions that no one can digest.
Imtiaz also uses his much familiar and loves tropes…
