Y'all literally have no idea how true to life this movie is and it shooowwwwssss
Funny and spooky, perfectly cast and done with an incredible attention to detail. Set design, soundscape, script all of it.
So fucking awesome seeing a movie like this come out of Malaysia and so fucking tragic that it will most definitely be censored.
++ ballsy as fuck for depicting Malay girls' sexuality. Note that in our last general elections the Islamist party won a majority for the first time since Independence. Idk look it up - films like this simply do not happen
My friends this is about so much more than menstruation - this is a young girl raging against the immovable mass of religious conservatism and misoginy!!!!!! She wins through letting in the darkness, she wins through camp. Zaffan ily.
“You’re dirty now”
Being a girl is a shame.
Showing skin and they got you slut shamed. Being the first girl that got period and they shamed you, they called you gross. They wouldnt even go near you. Having some fun and they said you were misbehaving and a shame to your family. Called you a whore when you showed interest in 'adult' things. An amazing daily routine of a teenage girl in conservative country.
Also a perfect depiction of when everything you do feels wrong, you feel uncomfortable in your own skin, and it leads you to a fucking dysmorphia; that’s the body horror.
And Farah, that one friend that everyone has in yall life. When you become excessively…
⛧ New 🩸 Mild Horror ⚠️ Not For Me (2023) ✈️
I've been looking forward to this film for like a year. It's finally available and honestly it's barely a horror movie. The only genre listed is horror, so it should be horror. Nothing happens except there are humans in trees with really bad CGI purple glowing eyes and a girl has her period and is bullied about it. The most horrifying part is how she dances for TikTok at the beginning and ending. I do not like TikTok. I do not like the music she dances to. I do not want to remember any of this exists. I do not like preteens. I do not like menstrual horror. Why…
it’s so rare (perhaps nonexistent) to watch malaysian youth portrayed like this, with so much rage and grime and disgust, digging the worst parts of growing up to the surface instead of shoving them under the rug, like we have been so used to doing. i am so so happy that this film has the audacity to even exist. a malay girl pulling off her tudung, yelling and slapping her mother, seeking her own definition of girlhood, malaysian girls openly discussing about periods, bras, sexuality—these are things that we’ve been taught aren’t ever supposed to happen. that are shameful to talk about. that don’t exist. but that doesn’t mean we don’t still experience it. and here it is, shown proudly…
Tiger Stripes may not be the first film to translate menstruation into body horror*, but Amanda Nell Eu's directorial debut was nonetheless striking enough with its energetic approach to the material that it nabbed the director the Grand Prize at this year's Critics Week in Cannes. Anchored by a simple but effectively physical performance from young Zafreen Zairizal, the film finds a way to play up the camp of its scale-to-ambitions ratio to become ultimately endearing, if not entirely robust.
At its base level, Tiger Stripes is an effective examination of the monstrosity stereotypically attributed to the oft-dreaded moment of the month for girls opening the door into adulthood; in practice, the playful campiness of Nell Eu's approach enables her…
Watched on Netflix y'all
really cool little movie about the voyeurism of puberty in patriarchy, especially the spectacle young girls become when their bodies begin to change and they have little to no agency regarding it. she is the only tiktok dancer i trust
bomohs being so relevant in malaysian culture is such a slay like if you don’t know the implications of dr rahim’s character plssss look up the malaysian shaman gripping coconuts at KLIA airport to summon mh370. first malaysian film at Cannes in 13 years and it’ll probably never be shown anywhere back home and it’s fucking tragic. feel incredibly lucky to have seen it in cinemas… tahniah to amanda nell eu 🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾🇲🇾
God this had so much potential 😭 the thematics were so interesting in the first half but the second half moves like molasses and none of the young actors seemed to have had much direction beyond “growl” or “scream.” This truly could’ve been an all-timer. Rats. I’m always game to see Malaysia on the big screen, though.
