Cinekraut’s review published on Letterboxd:
This is one of the best films I’ve seen in my life. From the opening shot panning over the deserted Texan landscape accompanied by the guitar sounds from Ry Cooder’s ethereally beautiful soundtrack I knew this film would be something special. And it turned out I wouldn’t be wrong with my notion. This film is perfectly shot, perfectly paced, perfectly scored, perfectly written and the characters are perfectly portrayed by the cast. I regard Harry Dean Stanton as one of my favourite actors (if not my absolute favourite) and I’m so glad I finally watched him in one of his (too) few leading roles. A brilliant portrayal, he owns this film. Every interaction between him and Hunter was either tear or laugh inducing.
I lived through many emotions while watching the film, that is probably why I liked it so much: At first there was puzzlement about our seemingly mute protagonist, then there were moments of incomprehension, joy, excitement, disappointment and sadness and in the end there was this bitter-sweet feeling and realisation that life doesn’t always turn out the way one may have planned.
We all should enjoy every moment of our beautiful lives. And if you haven’t already watched this perfect film, you should do so. I thank you all for reading and thank all the individuals involved in this sublime masterpiece of cinema. Rest in peace, Harry Dean. Your life will live on through all of us and people will keep on watching this film.
