Look at the bottoms of those trees. Look how gnarled they are, and yet they live. 

Not enough movies attempt to have honest conversations about being elderly— sometimes I think it’s because we are mostly afraid of the truths, the reality and the anxieties of being a burden on the ones you love. Thelma is not only unafraid to discuss them, but also has a blast poking fun at them. There is an acknowledgment that with age, there is a sense of identity loss, but it’s also a compelling reminder that despite how gnarled we may become, the human spirit remains very much intact. 

Just rambling now, but I never met my grandparents and this really hit me good. Would imagine it hits harder for those with connections to the grandparents. It’s also the hardest I laughed and cried during this year’s Sundance, so there’s that to love about it.

Call your grandma. Made me wish I could call mine again.

This movie is a goddamned delight. An action thriller with a 93-year old protagonist that’s also a meditation on what it means to age and depend on people as time goes on.

Grandma was scammed, somebody call The Beekeeper! 

Nevermind, she’ll handle it herself. A heartfelt intellectual exercise in depicting the mundane as harrowing. 

Because when you’re almost 100 years old, stairs are harrowing. Fantastic movie.
