we won’t get a puppet sex scene this hot and evil maybe ever again. Thanks French people
ahhhhhhhhhhhhh i adore this so much omg- a dandy as a protagonist, gay son, thot daughter, alcoholic father, hysterical wife, whooping cough infested child and an evil skeleton grandfather. nibble nibble nibble nibble
Every horror film should have a wee little pathetic French lad in a nightie and candle stick
funniest movie i've seen all year, clearly channeling the spirit of jean rollin but with a queer/theatrical over-dramatic energy that creates a dissonance between the oddball characters and the creepy atmosphere, really feels like a classic short story amplified by director andrien beau's soft ultra-grainy style. avoids gothic pastiche because it leans fully into folkloric mysticism and isolation, how a family can be ruined by adherence to patriarchal norms and warfare that infects the warriors once they return home. you could cut through the gloom here with a knife, so thick is the sense of forlorn decay and encroaching madness... and one would be remiss without mentioning the stunning, singular puppetry on display, which does so much to evoke the unreal terror that the vourdalak succeeds at. i wish more fantasy and horror films had puppets, they're always awesome!
