"When man meets a force he can't destroy, he destroys himself. What a plague you are."
I seem to be saying this a lot lately but I am genuinely surprised at how much I enjoyed this.
There was one major thing that bugged me in this. I know a lot of the cast were from New Zealand. In fact, maybe all of them minus Josh Hartnett, Melissa George (who is Australian), Ben Foster and Danny Huston might've been from New Zealand. Anyway, correct me if I'm wrong but Alaskan accents should be much different from Texan accents and I noticed that seems to be the default accent that Kiwis go towards. The odd exception, Manu Bennett for example, did pretty well but some of the smaller cast members accents seemed to be way off...at least to my knowledge but maybe I'm wrong. I thought the ending was a bit...sudden. All the buildup and then it just kinda...ended. There were a couple of minor storyline issues as well but nothing that really ruined my enjoyment.
The first thing that jumped out at me with this is the cinematography. There were some truly beautiful shots throughout the entire film. The performances of Josh Hartnett, Ben Foster and Danny Huston were all fantastic. While it's not overly scary, the horror scenes are really well done and there is some decent action too, although maybe a bit too much shaky cam.
I really liked this as an under-the-radar horror film and I think more people need to go out and watch it. Meanwhile, I am gonna try and find the comic it is based on.
