I find myself defending this movie far too often.
I don't want to get all preachy about how I read comic books. It's not as if I know the character better than the rest of the human race. But really this film nailed it for me. Mark Ruffalo is great and his inclusion in the MCU is brilliant. But for me Norton embodies far more of the struggle Bruce Banner deals with. Whedon was on the right path with Ruffalo but that has been left behind for a more funny version of Banner which works, don't get me wrong. But what gives the character depth is his loathing of his condition the utter depression he faces knowing what he is capable of. Dark? yes, but realistic and interesting.
The Hulk himself is by far the angriest version ever put to screen which is a huge plus. The VFX is not perfect but this was over a decade ago so we can forgive. (side note the best VFX Hulk has ever had was in The Avengers in 2012, I will fight anyone who disagrees) By far the most common criticism I hear about this movie is the CGI-fest fight scene at the end, and while I can understand where people are coming from to a point, what were we all expecting? It's a Hulk movie? of course it is going to end with a CGI fight scene. Unless of course people would rather Lou Ferrigno fought a giant polystyrene monster Power Rangers style. This scene works and fits the movie it is in, and also has some really impressive animation, so leave it alone.
A solid script, great performances for the most part and a big angry ass green guy. I will continue to defend this movie, it is The Incredible Hulk, what more could we want?
