Sebastián González’s review published on Letterboxd:
I think this is the best film of the year and the best Spider-man film since Raimi (I'm sorry Tommy I love you and you're great but Homecoming was dull)
GREAT STUFF:
>The animation because HOLY FUCK this movie is an art piece. I'm not even exaggerating: every frame of this film looks crafted and perfected. The way it blends different styles of animation, the way it glitches, the 3D/Chromatic aberration style, the grainy/comic-book-y feel of everything, the onomatopoeias, the camerawork, shots and COLOR GODDAMMIT
again: I consider this movie art based solely on how it looks, because it looks beautiful.
>It had so many background details and little shit telling you that it's another dimension, like, I HAVE to watch this again.
>The action scenes are the best I've seen in animation, ever. Sorry Incredibles, you're number 2.
>The story and script are brilliant. They shows what Spider-Man represents: a hero who could be anybody, a friendly neighbor who's just doing their job. Miles's journey from ordinary, kinda rebellious, artsy kid to the hero of New York plays the tropes like a fiddle, hits all the marks of a tragic origin story, and yer it all feels fresh and new because it's adapted and transformed to fit Miles's own journey. And that's the thing at the core of the film: do things your way. This time we're following a very different Spidey, and even though the tropes are there, they feel new because we see them in a new light.
>The script also shows that Lord and Miller were in this because it's really self-aware.
>Miles. What a great protagonist. More fearful and scared to disappoint than the Peter we're used to, yet more recursive and eager to help. A teenager with problems, complexes and difficulties in growing up.
>Gwen was fucking RAD and I support her haircut. It's nice to see a friendship get established and not just go right into a big damn kiss.
>SPIDER-NOIR. I LOVE HIM. I mean can you blame when he's so meta and he has the soothing voice of Mr Cage?
>Spider-Ham and Peni were adorableeeeeeeee
>Kingpin is so brutal, man, and worse, he has a decent villain motivation. Even when I laughed at his design, the guy was unstoppable!!
>I want Olivia to strangle me (seriously she's awesome too)
>Aunt May rocks
>I didn't even know who Prowler was and yet he's a great villain
>(how did they manage to include SIX villains and not fuck it up like some OTHER TWO MOVIES did??)
>that Stan Lee cameo, saying he was good friends with Spidey? It hurt
>ALSO that Steve Ditko thank-you? NICE
The only negative thing I can think of?
Some really extended moments at the climax, but that's usual superhero stuff.
Go watch this now. It's a love letter to Spider-Man and the best superhero movie of the year.
