We're destroying the planet. Fascists keep taking more and more power. Lots of people work way too much for way too little. Life is hard, so why not give yourself credit for watching movies?
It's like those participation trophies - you get to do a victory lap even if you only log one fucking movie. (SEE RULE 1)
RULE #1. DON'T STRESS OUT ABOUT THIS ... not even a little
Here are 25 pretty easy prompts to use. They're tailored for your watchlist, because ... you already want to watch those movies. See? EASY! (SEE RULE 1) EVERYTHING IS FINE. At least for a little while when you're watching some movies.
PROMPTS -
1. you've been meaning to watch this for AGES (whatever feels like ages to you)
2. you feel like watching this movie today (today being whatever day you decide to watch it)
3. the most recent film you added to your watchlist (feel free to add it now)
4. something you want to rewatch (you can feel that way before or after watching it)
5. shorter than 2 hours
6. Just Swell: released in 1940s, 1950s, or 1960s
7. Groove is in the Heart: released in 1970s, 1980s, or 1990s
8. At Least We're Still Alive: released in 2000s, 2010s, or 2020s
9. features human beings (just checking - you haven't been breaking rule 1, have you?)
10. someone personally recommended this movie
11. watch with someone else
12. you'd like to discuss it with someone (online or in person) ... we invite you to start that process with your tagged review
13. title starts with the first letter of your display (given) name
*It would be so cool if you would go into the settings of your profile and temporarily change your given name. And then write the temporary name in your list! Because I bet we'll come up with some silly ones.*
14. highest rating (in your watchlist)
15. you've seen a very negative review, but screw them - you want to watch it anyway! (SEE RULE 1 - don't force yourself to watch something you think will be bad)
16. you'd like to watch in a movie theater
17. an actor/actress you'd like to see more of
18. shuffle (and if you don't like what you get, shuffle again)
19. your favorite genre
20. a fantasy OR something that you think is so unrealistic or improbable that it might as well be considered a fantasy
21. a comedy OR it seems like it will have your type of humor
22. a horror movie (feel free to interpret horror as loosely as you wish, because it is a very subjective genre) (SEE RULE 1 - be gentle with yourself if horror movies aren't your jam)
23. a type of film you'd like to explore (could be a mood or a style or a theme or a wide genre or something very niche ... please note in your list how you defined your type)
24. your comfort movie (a rewatch of a movie that reliably feels familiar in a soothing way OR something you predict will be emotionally easy for you)
25. released in 2025
RULES -
1. DON'T STRESS OUT ABOUT THIS ... not even a little
2. You have one year (Jan 1 - Dec 31, 2025) to log as many films as possible.
3. link your list in the comments and tag it with vic25
4. write a review (one word is enough) for each movie that you watch for this challenge
5. tag each of those reviews with vic25
6. if you don't feel like watching the movie that fits the prompt, go ahead and pick your second choice or rearrange your watchlist (SEE RULE 1)
7. you may add or delete any movies on your watchlist whenever you want ... and change your list accordingly
8. you may watch these in any order
9. you may count as many rewatches as you want
10. feel a ridiculous amount of satisfaction and pride, because you like watching movies, and that's good enough for us
**Bonus Challenge 1 - IF YOU FEEL LIKE IT**
Pick one of your four favorite films, find a letterboxd member who also has it in their four favorites and watch another one of their four favorites ... have fun playing around with this ... if it starts to feel like you're breaking rule 1, then just pick a film in your watchlist that you think SHOULD be in other people's four favorites ...
techie directions: click on the movie on your profile, get to that movie's page, then click the green eye icon that has a number after it, and then click the word fans ... clicking on any of those people in the list will let you see their four favorites
**Bonus Challenge 2 - IF YOU FEEL LIKE IT**
A film that has played in a film festival
techie directions: click on the movie to get to its page, then click the word releases to the right of the word genre, and you will see a list of any well-known film festivals it has played at ... such as The Toronto International Film Festival or Cannes)
It's okay to be an overachiever and do more than one lap, but please don't brag about it so much that other people are tempted to break rule 1.
DISCLAIMER: Rules 3-6 are just the way Letterboxd challenges work. I've tried to make this challenge as light as possible within those confines, but any Letterboxd challenge is going to be kind of complicated. Please feel free to say, "Fuck this!" at any point. (And do the victory lap anyway - I mean who will know?)
TECHIE DIRECTIONS IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST LETTERBOXD CHALLENGE
1. Keep your tab with this challenge open (try not to close it for a while). If you need to find it again later, you can find my original challenge by searching for my username (MotherHen) and find it in my lists
2. Open another tab for Letterboxd (sign in)
3. If you don't already have at least 25 movies in your watchlist, you could have a little fun just adding more movies to it.
4. In your tab, hover over your username at the top of your screen and select lists
5. In your tab, select "start a new list" on the right
6. Title the list "[Your Username]'s Film Victory Lap 2025"
7. In THIS tab (my original list), copy all of my prompts from the description and then paste them into the description in your list in the other tab.
8. Type "vic25" into the Tags Bar.
9. Save your list. Basically, save your list every couple seconds, because Letterboxd tends to crash
10. When you want to (feel free to wait - SEE RULE 1) ... Edit your list. Use the Green "Add a Film" spot to search for films that you would like to use for any of the prompts.
11. While you're in the Edit mode for your list, click to "show notes", and "edit entry" for any film by typing the number of the prompt and the copied text for the prompt. That way, you'll remember which prompt you thought the movie would work for.
12. If you like things organized, when you're in Edit mode, you can drag those movies to keep them in the order of the prompts, but you do NOT have to watch them in that order.
When YOU feel like you have a good amount of movies in your list to be ready to start the challenge, make sure you have both the tab with my original list and the tab with your list open. If you feel ready when all you have is one movie added for the ninth prompt (features human beings), good on you! If you would like to wait until you have added a possible movie for every prompt, sure thing. SEE RULE 1: I'm not the boss of you.
13. From your tab, go ahead and hover over the "share" spot on the right of your list, and copy the link for your list. Go back to the tab with my original list. Paste the link to your list below as a comment in my list.
14. You can edit your own list whenever you want ... add more films and write their prompt number as notes for the entry ... delete them ... move them around ... whatever.
15. Log any of the films you watch for this challenge the same way you usually would, but just make sure you review each one and tag the review with vic25
