Stop Making Sense is the best movie I saw this year and one I can see myself watching over and over again.

I've listened to Talking Heads before, but 2018 was the year I really got into them. It was also the year I discovered that they had made this movie and that David Byrne had directed True Stories, which I had the good fortune to watch on Filmstruck before it shut down. My favorite albums would be True Stories, Speaking in Tongues, Fear of Music and Remain in Light.

The technical and musical wizardry on display in Stop Making Sense is astounding. The footage of the film is from four live shows at the Pantages Theater, but the editing and sound are so seamless that the Heads might as well be performing this at one go in real time. The sound and music are still so crisp after all these years, which is very impressive given that this was the first film to take full advantage of digital audio.

But what truly makes Stop Making Sense is the spirited, committed performance of David Byrne and his camaraderie with everyone onstage. They all seem to be legitimately enjoying themselves. There is not one song in this movie that I don't love, and I find myself smiling and singing along the more I watch it.
