Liam Willis’s review published on Letterboxd:
Starts off as your usual unremarkable cookie cooker 90s direct to video dreck before it suddenly introduces the absurd plot point of Cynthia Rothrock’s character sustaining a head injury and developing psychic powers, which is played out with surprising nonchalance except she uses the powers to her advantage to become a vigilante. I suspect this would’ve been extremely dull if not for this part of the storyline so it’s welcome, even if it is unbelievably out of place and feels very shoehorned in.
We also get brief appearances from both Walter Koenig and Brad Dourif. Dourif is unsurprisingly far above the material (plus his name being listed on the cover was what made me buy the DVD for the princely sum of £1 from a charity shop) whilst Koenig shows up for a couple scenes to speak in a laughably bad German accent. Yet the highlight of the film is probably a ridiculous fight scene early on where Rothrock ends up restraining a group of thieves with duct tape, and the whole scene plays out with unfitting cartoon sound effects and Mariachi music. This film’s also notable for featuring a couple of softcore sex scenes with Rothrock, which are laughable.
Rothrock herself is quite good in this, she has charisma and is obviously a very capable martial artist even if this film doesn’t showcase it too much. It is a shame that her career moved to the direct to video market after a promising start in Hong Kong, since I bet she would’ve done quite well if she went on to star bigger budgeted Hollywood productions. Also I’m surprised that she would’ve been about 39 when she filmed this, my god she’s aged tremendously!
This ended up being a bit of a surprise despite me reading out the silly premise on the back of the DVD cover, since I assumed that it wouldn’t live up to it. It does look and sound (thanks to the deeply unfitting and intrusive music cues) akin to a bland 90s TV movie at times (I always think of this type of film as being Channel 5-core) and wildly flip-flops between being an action film and a legal drama, not to mention the crazy psychic powers shit, yet I found it entertaining mainly for its more far-fetched elements. A good film to enjoy with a beer and pizza, like I did.
