If ANY of these prompts don't work for you, consider replacing it with a film off of my Top 100 list, The Revvy Canon!, or consider any other film in your watchlist if you are not feeling it.
And here are your prompts, gang!:
1-2: So I'm gonna start off weird as I'm sure people expect. For this, watch two VERY different films from the same person, or two films 'before' and 'after' a shift in their career (Examples: A Herzog documentary and a narrative feature, Adam Sandler in Punch-Drunk Love and That's My Boy, or Guillermo Del Toro's Blade II and Shape of Water
3: I've really been putting off some important films that my friends recommend me. So, for this, watch a five-star film from someone you follow or a friend who has a Letterboxd account!
4. I feel like films not having a backdrop makes people who use LB to choose what to watch tonight really discredit them. So, for this, give some respect to a film without an LB backdrop!
5. As of recent, there's been comparisons made between Francis Ford Coppola, Robert Zemeckis, and Steven Spielberg in my discussion circles (often for purpose of making fun of the latter two, but I digress.) For this prompt, watch a film from either of these directors, or a film clearly inspired by their works!
6. I've been reading a lot of poetry from WW1 veteran poets this past month. For this prompt, watch something about wartime PTSD, or a documentary on a 'lesser discussed' war.
7. For about half a year now, I've been curating a list of films about asexual or aromantic orientations, since I am in that group and didn't see a lot of that reflected in art. So, for this, watch a film on the list here, or nominate a film for the list as your own entry!
8. I've been looking into the documentary maker Alex Gibney recently. For this one, watch one of his documentaries, or a narrative feature with similar subject matter to one of his docs!
9. For those who have played RPGs with me, you may know I love to write vampires. For this prompt, watch a vampire film (suggestions include What We Do in the Shadows, Da Sweet Blood of Jesus, and Ganja & Hess)
10. I am often a fan of hugely maligned films or films that clearly have heart in them, but lack in execution. For this prompt, watch a film in the 0.4-2.5 range on letterboxd's average scale. (Examples I'd like to suggest are Blair Witch 2, Wild Wild West, and Beware! The Blob)
11. Here's a fun idea: watch a film with exactly 2 actors on the LB poster!
12. I'm one of those types who respect Nicolas Cage as an artist with no irony, so for this prompt, watch a film Nicolas Cage produced film, or any film produced by another member of the Coppola family.
13. My best friend my whole life is one of those people who like everything related to the Matrix, and think people are a little too hard on the sequels. For this prompt, watch a film from someone who directed his favorite of the series, The Animatrix.
14. A guy I think we don't give enough credit to is William Lustig. Watch one of his films, or another film with 'Maniac' in the title.
15. This year, I finished watching all of Takashi Miike's films, over a hundred of them. This process gave me a certain appreciation of the history of Japanese production methods, given the man's several decade long career. So for this, watch a Miike film, a film scored by his composer Koji Endo, or a film released under the V-Cinema Production Label.
16. Since I first got really into films because of Hardcore Henry, I've respected the actor Sharlto Copley. For this prompt, watch a film he stars in!
17. I've been meaning to watch more of Hideaki Anno's work for a bit after watching Shin Godzilla a couple years back. For this prompt watch one of his films, one of the more recent (post-00s) Godzilla films, or a film that directly references Godzilla (Crank 2 works for this one!)
18. Around the time I 'first got into film' also, Yorgos Lanthimos was gaining in popularity following the release of The Lobster and resurging interest in his film Dogtooth. For this prompt, watch a film by Lanthimos, or another Greek New Wave film!
19. I've always been a huge believer in Found Footage as an art form since watching Marble Hornets as a kid. For this prompt, watch a found footage film! (a recent favorite of mine has been the mysterious film without any production info, Murder Death Koreatown)
20. Free Space! I have thousands of films on my watchlist, and you probably do too. So, for this prompt, pick one!
21. I am a vulgar auteurist, and have noticed a rise in vulgar auteur theory recently! So for this prompt, watch one of a film from some of their favorite directors: M. Night Shyamalan, Tony Scott, The Wachowski Sisters, Michael Bay, and Abel Ferrara
22. A great discovery for convenient watching has been Tubi TV, a free with ads service. So for this prompt, watch a film available on Tubi!
23. My favorite film of all time is The Red Spectacles by Mamoru Oshii, but I haven't watched a lot of his other stuff. So for this, watch an Oshii film, or a film from the same director of your favorite film.
24. Despite having an obsession with the French language, I've seen few French films, specifically none by the famous director Jean-Luc Godard. So for this, watch a Godard film, or a film from another European country besides France.
25. A saving grace in the pandemic has been David Bull, an old man who makes YouTube documentaries on Japanese woodblock printing from his home studio. So for this, watch a film about a specific hobby or occupation, maybe something that's chill like Bull's videos.
26. Throughout this year, I've been gaining interest in the philosophers Werner Herzog and Slavoj Zizek. So for this prompt, watch one of the films that feature them, or a film with philosophy as a central theme.
27. I personally feel like Spike Lee's artistic output has gone a little downhill in this decade. For this prompt, watch a pre-2010s Spike Lee film, or a film from a director you have similar thoughts on.
28. It's been great seeing one of my favorite musicians, Boots Riley, become a director now, even going as far as to make the soundtrack of his film in a similar style to the rest of his discography. For this prompt, watch a film by a musician, or a film featuring vocals on its soundtrack (if you're having trouble, licensed music that features in the film counts, too).
29. After a personal encounter my best friend detailed to me, I've had a little bit of an obsession with the Yakuza. For this prompt, watch a film featuring the Yakuza, or a Japanese made crime film.
30. This is usually the spot someone would say "watch a film released this year", but there hasn't been a lot of interesting stuff passing me by. So for this prompt, watch a film that was released in the year before you were born.
31. New Year's Day is coming up! For this day, chill a little. Pick a comedy film with light subject matter.
