28 Days Later on the Event Horizon... sorry, Infini 😁🤪

Well-made sci-fi body horror. The story is sci-fi standard, a bit derivative, seen many a-times, but the FX, the photography and production design are phenomenal, really creates an eerie atmosphere.

For fans, I’d recommend ☝️

Ooh. Someone finally made a film with elements of the game Dead Space. Very much enjoyed this at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Great effects, solid acting, good splatter. Bit ho-hum about the whiny wife - do we really need that character again in a film?

That tiny gripe aside I thought this was great. Probably Event Horizon since we last saw a solid sci-fi horror film?

Recommended.

Infini is an Australian sci-fi horror that riffs on a lot of classics, using its low-budget to mimic a lot of the tropes successfully utilised in many made before it. It is a hard film to watch without appreciating the far better stories it is playing on - think Alien's stripped back nature, The Thing's paranoia, the look of Pandorum and pieces of plot from Dead Space. Putting all these together makes this mildly fascinating, because the director does build a bit of tension and clearly has a ton of love for sci-fi and horror as two individual genres. It is on the long side and the cast are awful, but it remains entertaining, bloody and uses its budget to surprisingly efficient effect.

Trades logic and reason for yelling and repetition. New pet peeve joining the “clearly empty paper coffee cup” is the “obviously lightweight plastic gun.”

Bad action movie masquerading as a bad Sci fi

I always feel bad when something that has massive ambitions faceplants, Infini is so clearly aiming to be the love child of Aliens and The Thing, for its micro budget, it looks pitch perfect. The production design here is immaculate, the sets are limited but really good, it’s the over lit digital look and black hockey pad costumes that do betray how low the budget must’ve been on a visual level.

But the film itself is just so boring. After the first hour the movie looks like it’s about to begin concluding but just slows to a damn crawl before pretending it’s about to wrap up again, this goes on for 50 minutes. 

The cast is playing this all way too seriously, there’s none of the charm of the movies it’s riffing on and they’re all pretty boring really. 

I wish the best for everyone involved, hopefully future efforts are better.

A movie that had potential but just didn’t stick the landing it’s just all over the place

Okay so, This one came out of nowhere.
I have no idea how I missed this movie - but man, I enjoyed it.

(okay, It loses 1.5 stars for a cheese ball moment towards the end, that took me right out of the movie. But gosh darn it - I forgive it!)

Um... go watch it.

It starts with a bang, introducing this clever way of travelling through space as a stream of data, unfortunately, very soon, stuff go awry.
Terror awaits in deep space.
Ah, we have seen that before, Alien, Event Horizon, search and rescue teams, and we, are being briefed, sent out and they have to cope with the prevailing circumstances on the furthest space colony.
From that time, stuff stop being hasty, and the colony is explored with patience. After we meet the alien substance, the story loses some of its steam (pun intended) and becomes long-winded and draggy, with again, twice on one evening, preposterous and drawn-out man to man fights.
I must admit, towards the ending, the movie pulls itself back together with a nice turn, resulting in a flawed, yet meritorious low budget scifi story.
