All I’ve ever heard from this film is how good it is. But that’s literally it. I’ve seen the poster and thought it was just gunna be some sort of boat trip film but god damn I’m 10m in and can already tell I’m going to adore this film.
I also convinced myself that this was gunna be in England but forgot that America just stole all their town names from England.

And yeah holy fuck this is amazing.
My taste in films has changed so much in the past couple of years, every new film on my top 4 seems to be moving relationship stories, this, banshees, holdovers and the cure are all so coded in the same way and I really don’t know what it is with these types of films but I just fucking adore them with my whole heart.

The cinematography is fantastic, the landscapes are cold, the weathers bleak, it’s isolating, it’s stark as hell it really does perfectly mirror Lee’s emotional state.
There’s really nothing vibrant to it at all the use of natural lighting and it’s more neutral colour palette really enhances the tone that it set out to create and makes you feel the massive amount of weight on his shoulders;
On top of that it’s well complimented by the sound design, instead of being in your face with a more melodramatic sound like other films of this nature uses it instead makes the most noise with its subtle use of silence and more natural ambient noise.

The pacing is phenomenal, although “slow” at times it really doesn’t feel it, there’s really no dull moments whatsoever, when it does get “slow” it feels very deliberate and allows you to fully absorb the gravity of each situation.
The non linear aspect to this for me is perfect, it adds so much depth to Casey’s role and makes you understand every choice he makes throughout, obviously then allowing you to actually engage with it as it really doesn’t shy away from uncomfortable realities of life.

I think my favourite scene in this is such a short, simple almost not needed scene which could be easily missed on any watch of this, but it’s near the end when they’re playing catch and Lee misses the ball and tells Patrick to leave it and let it roll away.
But he doesn’t.
I think In that one small scene alone massively shows both of their mindsets, why it’s actually better for them to be apart in the long run, how both of their pasts have affected them but one wants to let it be and the other wants to make change.

I could be picking up something from nothing but for me that scene was just so fucking good.

And I really don’t think it would be fair to review this and not talk about the performances.
All I’ve ever seen from Casey Affleck is his minor role in American Pie.
THIS MF HAS RANGE.
Like genuinely such an exceptional performance from him, he perfectly captured everything about being a man burdened by grief and regret. It came off so damn authentic he didn’t have to rely on mass amounts of dialogue it came mainly through his more subtle gestures and expressions, and the way he interacted with people.
He deserved every single bit of that Oscar.

Idk how this doesn’t have one million watched. If you’ve not seen this please check it out

Please if you’ve got any recommendations that are like this film or any of my top 4 as they’re all very similar let me know.
