I've been using Netflix Mail for so long, so consistently, and have been so diligent about rating what I watch, that it has learned to recommend me "killer bear movie directed by Sonny Chiba."
Japanese Grizzly, only based on an actual series of bear attacks in 1915 Hokkaido. Now, “based” is a strong word here because there’s little reality and fiction share. I assumed the movie’s lack of activity was out of some respect for the tragedy, that the festival sequence was the peak of this incident, but uh, no, none of that happened. Nor is the bear’s appetite for women real, which might’ve been a chilling characteristic of the killings if it were true. Nor is the bear’s nickname Red Spots accurate. This damn bear is an impostor! So why is this movie so dull? If you’re going to take it in a fictional direction, there’s a world of possibilities for director (!!)…
A "blank check" of sorts for Sonny Chiba(his first directorial effort), which unfortunately floundered at the box office and destroyed his career(forcing him to sell off a restaurant chain and his stunt team, the Japan Action Club).
It's a action film loosely based upon a real series of bear attacks on humans in Hokkaido in 1915. A bear is attacking villagers and specifically prefers eating human women; so a team of local men try to take it down. But there's a young woman named Yuki who is also quite capable and wants to take it down herself, which leads to tension as the two factions try and fail to take down the bear.

This man-in-suit Bear costume is god awful. The werewolf from Silver Bullet looked more like a bear than this thing. The Masturbating Bear from Conan O’Brian looked more realistic. In fact I bet it looks less like a bear than your Uncle Larry at a furry key party.
I have this one 3 stars for the camp factor alone. It’s not a great movie by any metric. It’s a Japanese movie from 1990 so it’s corny as hell. But it’s also so goofy bad that it banked back around to goofy good.

Bears have been in the news a lot recently here in Japan, which led me to the story of the 1915 Sankebetsu brown bear incident in Hokkaido, which led me to Sonny Chiba’s directorial debut based on the attacks.

80% drama about a woman trying to break the mold in a patriarchal society, 20% a man in a hilarious bear costume trying to attack Hiroyuki Sanada, Remains is pretty good fun. Sanada is still terrible at this point of his career, constantly posing like he's in a music video, there's not enough bear action, and the movie loses all of its feminist points by making its heroine fight the final battle in a bikini, but the movie is consistently entertaining throughout.

In 1915 on the island of Hokkaido in northern Japan, a group of five bear hunters are tracking a giant bear that has been terrorising the small villages, attacking and eating only women, carrying off their bodies. This is Sonny Chiba's only effort as a director—he does not appear in the movie, but apparently believed enough in the project to sink a lot of his own money into the production which ruined him financially when it did not perform in the theatres. This explains why Chiba went on to make a bunch of shitty Hollywood paycheck movies in the 90s and beyond.

Directed by Sonny Chiba and starring protege Hiroyuki Sanada, this Japan Action Club (JAC) 20th anniversary project is a solid film, showcasing not only some well-shot (be it a bit sparse) action scenes, as one can expect of the JAC, but also the stunning wilderness of Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido.
Based on the true story of a gigantic bear known as “Red Spots” terrorizing local villages in the mid-1910s, Chiba’s directorial debut is a professional piece of work that has a distinct atmosphere and certainly knows how to entertain. It falls a bit flat during its mid-point by focusing more on drama, but it never bores. Even though the close encounters with the bear are clearly filmed with a man in a fluffy bear suit, it is shot and edited with kinetic force, and it adds to the charm.

Sonny Chiba celebrated 20 years of his Japan Action Club with a very ambitious directorial debut making a historical action film about a real life bear attacks in Hokkaido in 1915. You can really tell this was a passion project, nobody else would make a historical action film about bear attacks unless they really wanted to. To celebrate Japan Action Club’s 20th anniversary, Sonny Chiba goes big and directs an ambitious film based on true events about a village of bear hunters going after a killer bear who specifically targets women.
Hiroyuki Sanada plays Eiji who accompanies the town chief (Bunta Sugawara) and a small group as they go around the snowy mountainside in search for the bear. A girl from the village, Yuki, also sets out after her family is murdered by the bear. This comes to a head as Eiji and Yuki (who, due to plot reasons, is clad in a battle bikini) confront the bear in a small shack, taking their enemy (as well as the shack) down.

They were struggling to stretch the bear hunting into two hours (and I was equally struggling to stay awake for two hours) so it’s filled with boring flashbacks and flashbacks within flashbacks which are not bear hunting, or good. I like the snowy look and nomadic feel of the movie and if you squint hard enough it almost looks like Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, a little bit.
