Slappy McGee’s review published on Letterboxd:
THIS.
MOVIE.
GOES.
SO.
DAMN.
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARD!!!
It's an AMAZING film!!!
The hype is real and no exaggeration: this movie is a killer!
This is writer/director Coralie Fargeat's sophomore effort, and after a terribly written script on her first outing "Revenge" but with glimmers of great direction on that outing, I was lukewarm on how this film might turn out. (My Review of "Revenge" lets you know what a stinker I thought that movie was).
Well, suffice it to say... her screenwriting woes are over!!
This film absolutely ROCKS! In every way.
The film is also blessed with some outstanding cinematography by Benjamin Kračun. Just fantastic work!
The script is full of INCREDIBLE SOCIAL SATIRE and a SHARP-AS-A-TACK Social Commentary. It bristles with it.
There are nods to David Cronenberg and David Lynch in both tone and story. It's amazing BODY HORROR!
And not only technically and from a story/craft point of view... because the performances by both Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley are FULLY REALIZED and contain such ONSCREEN BRAVERY. Both do astounding work in their roles.
Plus a maniacal and unhinged performance by Dennis Quaid that is PERFECT for this film, especially in its Entertainment Industry commentary. It's hilarious and at the same time: horrifying.
This is EASILY my most favorite film of the year. Both in horror and in general. It's that good.
I'll need some distance before I watch it again.
But I'll tell ya... I'm excited to tread this dark path once more.
Brilliant film.
