Slappy McGee’s review published on Letterboxd:
So the DJINN is BACK!!! ...because Evil (*ahem*) ...never dies.
And in this (first) sequel, we also get Andrew Divoff back in the title role. His over-the-top, condescending, asshole-of-a-Djinn is a fuck-ton of a lotta fun to watch.
This sequel pretty much follows in the footsteps of the original, with the Djinn killing off a bunch of fools who don't know how phrase their wishes. He is basically collecting souls that he'll cash in towards the end of the picture while he tries to get the original girl (who released him from his jeweled prison) to make THREE wishes so after which he can rule the world and let his evil minions run rampant around the land.
Why?
Cause them's the damn rules, fool!
Got it?
Good.
The film is directed by Jack Sholder who also directed the second Nightmare on Elm Street film, so he knows what he's doing. And it shows. It's a pretty fast moving, silly and QUITE FUN gorefest of Djinn trouble-making.
Lots of great practical effects. Two sequences stick out. One with a prisoner being force-squeezed through the jail bars of his prison cell. And the other of a bunch of tourist gamblers getting fucked up royally when demons run wild in a casino. (Hey! It's Bokeem Woodbine as the casino manager!)
Ultimately, this is a cheesy good time - not as good as the original, but exactly what you want in a horror sequel. Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice.
