Hooptober 11: Your Vice is Locked Room in an Old Dark House and Only I Have the Chainsaw
#11: 4 Italian films (1)
My copy

I watch CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD every fall, but I recently bought the 4k/blu-ray set from Cauldron films and I wanted to see how this looks on my new TV. So I popped this on for one of my Italian films, and a general mood setter.

It seems like THE BEYOND gets the bulk of the Fulci love. Don’t get me wrong, THE BEYOND is great but for my money, this gut-puking, skull-smashing gloomfest on the streets of Dunwich is where the godfather of gore shines. Maybe it’s because it’s set in my home state of Massachusetts, maybe it’s because of the fog that permeates every scene or maybe it’s the bombastic soundtrack, but I love the atmosphere of this movie. It’s also got some memorably gnarly kills and genuine scares.

I enjoy Fulci’s Gates of Hell trilogy so much that I’ve been trying to capture that feeling in book form. I’m currently reading “The Final Gate” by Lucas Mangum and Wes Southard and if you’re looking for a novella that captures the Fulci vibe, look no further.

I just realized that Bob the town pervert is wearing a Notre Dame jacket, lol. Love that for them. I never noticed that while watching it on streaming so that’s a point for physical media.
