Hooptober 11: #19
[Criteria: 1 film starring Donald Sutherland]
Exploration of grief and trauma through horror is not a new concept. It is one of the most recurring themes in the genre and it is explored in as many ways imaginable as possible. And yet, there always comes a movie that just shatters that monotony of storytelling and sweeps you away. Nicholas Roeg's Don't Look Now is a chilling and unsettling horror dealing with grief but it is never overtly scary, but it creeps up on you with the way Roeg keeps building on the tense and in the final few minutes it gives you a knockout punch in the gut that takes your breath away and you find it hard to recover from. I have been trying to find words, make sense of what I just witnessed for the past half hour or so but all I can do was just sit in silence and recover from not just the movie but also the sudden burst of my own life's grief hitting me like an emotional freight train. Brilliant movie but goddamn did it give me a fucking emotional breakdown that I wasn't ready for. Will cry myself to sleep now. Good night!
