Although I did really like it I was honestly expecting to like it a whole lot more than what I did as I love films with little to no narrative and great dialogue.
The film’s strength lies in its raw authenticity , it’s very obvious to see why Zhao won best director for this, she seamlessly blends both fiction with an almost documentary style approach incorporating real Nomads which not only grounds the narrative but also fully enriches it allowing you to actually connect with the characters on a deeper level then your average film.
The performances are nuanced and understated but yet so powerful you never felt like their journeys weren’t based solely on survival (which is easy to do from the outside) but instead a quest for freedom and a community but most of all a purpose.
