Nic’s review published on Letterboxd:
though not as bursting with empathy for carnies as something like freaks, nightmare alley is still an important entry into films that portray these folks as non-disposable. our central character - acted convincingly by tyrone powers - moves through various sideshow performers, begging to learn their tricks as to reap more from the industry. he moves through a traveling show and finally ends up as a mentalist in chicago and although his powers of manipulation are considerable, he is not the only one out there highly capable. a vicious cycle ensues - as always, the past never forgets - and the claustrophobia of his situation sets in. this movie ends the way one could guess, but the way it takes you there is brilliant.
