Nic’s review published on Letterboxd:
i had planned to see stan brakhage’s dog star man tonight on 16mm, but for whatever reason the projectionist did not show, so we went on over to another place that was showing 50s san francisco noir - the sniper. it was preceded by some tricia about the film - the good kind where she went over locations, production details, and some unfortunate info about the director (he was initially part of the hollywood 10, but did eventually testify to HUAC). always love to see the streets of sf - especially from the 50s - show up in a noir. they’re used amazingly here, and it feels like 90% of the film is shot on location, which is mainly north beach/telegraph hill (was a perfect watch in that neighborhood). the movie has essentially the 50s version of an incel, and has a bit more “nuance” on the subject than i’d expect for the time, though i don’t think it spends the right points on the material. also, the lieutenant looks like irishman deniro. overall, cool movie, oddly prescient, and beautiful location shots.
