Nic’s review published on Letterboxd:
one of those movies that was so influential you've seen scenes from it dozens of times. awesome start to the noir/gangster genre, filled with foggy streets, shadowy corners, a proto femme fatale, and more. watching this reminded me i need to do a josef von sternbeg deep dive, but this was a great start to his filmography.
ALSO, very cool that this won for best original script at the first oscars and was apparently luis buñel’s favorite film of all time - he picked a good one.
