The year 2020, better described as the prelude to that inevitable bellum omnium contra omnes all the cool philosophers were talking about, has been such a nightmare in its own horrid way that it almost makes flocking to the outskirts of cinema's pale imitations an exercise in redundancy. But my first two Hooptobers were a lot of fun, and locking myself away to watch movies is a surefire way to help the year (and the quarantine) go by faster. It's not as though there is much else to look forward to these days, and with the pudding once again slipping off the table and onto the floor, we might as well ingest our hands so that we may throw them up in resignation. Cinemonster's master list is here, for anyone who is curious.
EDIT: I've gotten off to such a roaring start that I've decided, for the first time, to tack on Cinemonster's extra assignments: Cube 2 and The Witch Who Came From the Sea.
EDIT: After watching Noriko's Dinner Table, I have decided that it is not really a horror movie at all and I have replaced it with R-Point, which was on my list initially before itself being replaced prior to the start of the challenge period.
EDIT: After watching The Figurine, I have reached the same conclusion and elected to replace it with End of the Wicked, also from Nigeria. I can only hope that this one will count as a suitable horror movie.
EDIT: After watching Casshern, yadda yadda yadda. I replaced it with Viy.
In addition to the films listed below, I'll also be watching the new series of Higurashi: When They Cry, the first episode of which aired on October 1st. There are few more iconic horror anime than the 2006 series, and certainly very few works of film or television that I've found quite as chilling and repulsive. Only time will tell whether this new series stacks up, but with the original cast returning and new Monogatari-style character designs, it should at least be fun. Of course, we'll be well out of the Hooptober season by the time the series actually finishes, but what better time to start?
I wound up finishing the main list at 9:18 pm on October 17, a full two weeks ahead of my previous two Hooptobers. After knocking out 31 movies in 33 days, it took me another two weeks to watch the final two. I finished The Witch Who Came From the Sea at 5:13 pm on Halloween - still a few hours ahead of last year, though I'll be counting the 17th as my actual finish date.
