Slappy McGee’s review published on Letterboxd:
Directed by Robin Williams' daughter Zelda, this movie is written and produced by one of my favorite current screenwriters Diablo Cody.
Man, I love her writing. So creative and sharp. Great stories and even better dialogue. She's such a great writer.
This movie is set in 1989 and rings true every bit of the way.
... I mean... for a monster movie. ...heh...
It's a horror comedy romance, heavy on the comedy and social commentary as Cody's scripts usually are.
And as the title suggests, it's a send-up or re-imagining of the Frankenstein tale. It has a modern twist of course. Well, as modern as the late 80's are... which is to say about 40-years-ago-modern.
It doesn't hold back on the danger of the monster or the mayhem and death, which is so great because that keeps the stakes quite high, even though this is really light-hearted-albeit-VERY-DARK comedy.
I really dug this flick.
Will definitely revisit it soon.
