”The eyes are the windows to the soul.”
I have to say that I think the first act of this really outdoes the rest of the film. The uneasiness and the mystery is build up to perfection from John Carpenter, the central Christopher Reeve character is great in every moment, and the entire government backdrop creates a perfect sense of nervousness of what’s to happen. Unfortunately however, once the actual plot of the film starts to take shape, I started to lose interest in the overarching story.
I wasn’t completely thrown off of it all and by the time the credits I did enjoy the film as a whole, but I really much more enjoyed the suspense that was brought in to start. Frankly, the film just isn’t all that interesting by the end. You don’t really get a valid horror aspect and you don’t totally get that mystery to be satisfying by the end. It’s definitely not one of John Carpenter’s best, but Village of the Damned was a solid enough film with some good aspects thrown in here and there.
