cannes can #4 et finale

honestly, this was amazing. i’ve never seen a movie like this one before. it covers so much ground — capturing in raw form the experiences of being trans, of feeling out of body, of having to sacrifice what you have to identify with how you feel. no movie i have seen has done this so successfully and in a way that is so - fun? calling attention to every challenge and dancing through it, literally. and to address cartels, the thousands of missing people in mexico, all at once? during a musical? it’s a challenge to pull off that style of movie in and of itself and emilia pérez not only does that successfully but doesn’t take itself too seriously, from songs about Vaginoplastys to random quips. it’s digestible, with serious depth.

other pros;
- zoe saldana aced that shit
- you can tell that this screenplay is amazing. i wish i could understand spanish (this experience was linguistically insane for me - spanish audio switching to english and even hebrew at times, with french subtitles).
- selena gomez plays an awesome dramatic wife
- the plot was not easily predictable nor did it try to satisfy everyone. it just was
- viewers applauded at the end hooray!

cons:
- couple in front of me making out during all the most important scenes fUck them that was so rude
- the editing was not great tbh, i hope they clean that up for when it wide releases
- will this wide release? i feel like casting zoe saldana and selena gomez is an effort to get americans to watch a movie that’s entirely in spanish in theaters, we’ll see
- i have an inkling selena gomez doesn’t speak great spanish

anyways so lucky to have seen this. amazing!
