A Story of Two Sisters
★★★ Watched

So this lost film is apparently not lost at all. I just assumed it was.

The story of Janghwa and Hongryeon is a classic Korean folktale. It has seven film adaptations and one TV series. The most famous adaptation is A Tale of Two Sisters (2003). I used to think that all the versions made before A Tale of Two Sisters were lost, but then I found this 1972 version called A Story of Two Sisters. There were also versions…

Journey to the Seventh Planet
★★★ Rewatched

After the release of the infamous monster movie Reptilicus (1961), Sidney W. Pink gave the world another Danish-American science fiction film, this time venturing into space.

Background
In 1959, American producer and director Sidney W. Pink travelled to Denmark to develop Danish-American co-productions. This partnership produced the fantasy comedy Elefanter på loftet (The Greeneyed Elephant, 1960), two versions of Reptilicus (1961) and Journey to the Seventh Planet (1962). Like Reptilicus, this was a co-production between Denmark's Saga Studio and the…

Vampyr

In 1935 the newspaper Berlingske Tidende wrote this about a young man from Denmark who had seen Vampyr:

“A few years ago, the young man, who is about 25 years old, went to the cinema and saw the much-talked-about film Vampyr. The eerie film made such a strong impression on him that he hasn’t spoken a word since. He believes he is under a curse and that if he opens his mouth, he will be possessed by a vampire. In…

This isn’t sword and sorcery… it’s sword and planet.

The sword and planet genre is a pulpy mixture of fantasy and science fiction, where humans find themselves on other planets and are involved in sword and sorcery-type adventures. The fantasy settings have been replaced with an alien planet, and the fantasy monsters have been replaced with extraterrestrials. The most famous example is Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Barsoom/John Carter books.

Sword and planet films are quite rare compared to sword and sorcery…

I watched this a few years ago without subtitles, but I have finally found subtitles for it.

Libahunt (1969) is an Estonian/Soviet film directed by Leida Laius and based on a play by August Kitzberg. Libahunt is Estonian for werewolf, and the story draws on some interesting folklore.

Witches & Werewolves
Libahunt begins during a Saint John’s Eve celebration, when Tiina (Ene Rämmeld) is accused of being a werewolf by her romantic rival, Mari (Malle Klaassen). Both Tiina and Mari are…

With the new 4K disc from Vinegar Syndrome, the special effects in Reptilicus have never looked more realistic.

Background
In 1959, American producer and director Sidney W. Pink travelled to Denmark to create Danish-American co-productions. This venture resulted in the fantasy comedy Elefanter på loftet (The Greeneyed Elephant, 1960), two versions of Reptilicus (1961) and Journey to the Seventh Planet (1962). Of these films, Reptilicus is certainly the most (in)famous.
