Pretty hard to watch. The lead actress is painfully without personality made worse by being surrounded by notoriously expressive Italians. The father of the family conveys so much through mere facial expression that I gasp when the director juxtaposed his wordless emotional performance with someone the lead taking a piece of meat out of a pan and putting on a plate only to exclaim "so you can cook."

Barely getting that last half star from me. Serviceable and fine but nothing very moving. They broke no molds and pushed no envelopes. Has some pretty visuals occasionally. I still don't understand how he made his last about face work within the rules the film established about the science.
Eggars does some things so well it leaves me resentful of the other things he just kinda leaves lying on the table. A kind of flatness to certain aspects of his films that I cant shake and I keep seeing. I think the dialogue and the minimal cast of heavy hitters in the Witch and The Lighthouse paper over those short comings.
