It was the best of genres, it was the worst of genres.
No lens was too wide, no angle too exaggerated, no lighting too garish. The colors a sickly pastel. The weather? Dark and rainy, but in a heightened, artificial way. No performance too broad, no winking '50-'60s pop culture reference too kitschy. The production design? Cartoonishly gothic and overwrought. No special effect too outlandish or unconvincing. The music? Zany Danny Elfman or something that sounds like knockoff Danny Elfman, of course.
If this description fits, it belongs on the list. I'm excluding those Barry Sonnenfeld Addams Family movies because they were actually hits. Post-2000 the Burton aesthetic morphs into something else, and the knockoffs change accordingly. Thus A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Cat in the Hat etc. are also bad fake Tim Burton, but a different sort altogether.
