Zeke: "Thanks a lot, Matt. That's a really great scene."
Larry Fessenden's creature feature wastes whatever potential it had by populating a rowboat with the most insufferable teenagers ever committed to film. You'll spend 90 minutes actively rooting for the giant fish.
The setup's simple—six high school grads trapped on a sinking boat with a man-eating catfish circling below. Fessenden designed the animatronic fish himself, and while it's admirably practical, it looks ridiculous with bulging ping-pong eyes like a reject from a children's show. Shot entirely in natural daylight, the film has zero atmosphere.
The cast tries, but they're saddled with an atrocious script. Every character's a one-dimensional archetype. When they start…
they said “she’s going to a better place...” then lowered their friends dead body into a lake to be eaten by a giant monster fish and that’s all there is to say about this film really
English below
mid being attacked by a giant killer fish with half of their friends dead and sacrificed... he really turned around to his brothers girlfriend and went 👁👅 👁
I can’t really decide if it’s so bad that’s it’s good (or at least enjoyable) again.. I mean there’s a character trying to argue with the killer fish that’s stalking them by asking „What do you want?“ 🤔 that’s the level of ingenious dialogue we’re dealing with here 😋
Moronic characters, horrible dialogue, rubbery ridiculous bulbous-eyed fish..
Ok, ok, in the end it’s a fairly entertaining c-movie creature feature, best enjoyed with a couple cold ones 🍻 and some friends I’d say.
this is garbage but im obsessed with the surprisingly decently made fish i love him so much
These dumb mfs on a boat for 10 minutes: “Time to sacrifice ourselves to the big fish”
Although I think the abysmally low ratings this film has been given are incredibly harsh, they’re also sort of understandable. For a start, I come to this film as a fan of Larry Fessenden. I think Habit and Depraved are both outstanding indie horror takes on the vampire and Frankenstein myths. I trust the guy. For anyone coming in cold looking for a simple creature feature, Beneath is likely to disappoint in a few ways. And if you have no existing goodwill for Fessenden and his work, it’s not surprising that the whole thing might just come across as inept.
First, let’s address the giant fish in the room. The creature is simultaneously impressive and hugely problematic. Impressive in the sense that it…
the characters are hard to like and they all seem rather annoying. the giant fish wasn’t so bad and i was kinda rooting for it to eat them all
I was rooting for the big monster fish..
And it was quiet..
Unlike this rowdy annoying bunch
🚣
First of all, it was much slower and more boring than I expected. I thought it would be more of an action-based horror movie, but it turned out to be a psychological thriller. Although I really liked this subgenre, I didn't enjoy the movie very much because of its weak execution.
The plot and script were simple but decent-ish, but the characters were HORRENDOUS, each one of them was irritating, annoying, imbecilic and pathetic (especially Kitty), the acting performances were terrible, surprisingly the soundtrack was very good, and the rest of the elements were also below average. I always say that if you have a low-budget, B-level horror movie that should normally and logically be bloody, you have to make it bloody and probably gory.
PS: I still can't decide whether the changing psychology of the characters in difficult and scary situations was well-developed or if they were all just bunches of as*holes.
