...ah the beauty of "MannVanuary"... finding hidden gems like this one. A fantastic Film Noir that is a pretty solid representation of the style itself.
So, the unlikely "hero" of this movie is an ex-con named Steve Lacey, which when I saw him I said "HEY, IT'S WILL PARKER FROM OKLAHOMA!!!".
...and it was indeed.
Lacey is trying to turn his life around, but he's caught between the crooks he knew in the pen trying to pull him back into a life of crime and the highly unlikable policemen trying to frame him up. The head detective is played by Sterling Hayden and I always love me a good Hayden acting performance. He's a gruff piece of work in this movie as well.
Add to this that Lacey has a lovely innocent wife that would do anything for him, and he is truly caught between his past, present and future.
What's a fella to do with so many pulls, obstacles and desires all kicking him in the soft bits? A great noir set-up indeed.
Plus, in this film you have some fine supporting roles played by tough guy Charles Bronson and fine character actor Ted de Corsia. Not to mention, I always love some Dub Taylor in a small but pivotal role at the beginning of the story.
Yeah, this is a good, gritty Noir that keeps your stomach wrapped in knots out of anxiety for Lacey as he tries to navigate the shadows in the trap of "the City".
