***************

"I love you so much, I wish I liked you."

Joan Fontaine is quite good in this subpar Nicholas Ray melodrama. She plays a soulless harlot that is about as unlikable a character as you can come across in one of these older films.

It's funny because at first, she seems so sweet and nice. Then slowly, ever so slowly her true nature emerges. By the end of the film, she is fully revealed and her disposition never changes. But all of her cheating, lying and gold-digging schemes have been revealed. It's horrible... and yet fascinating. And like I said: Fontaine is great in the role.

I can't say I particularly liked the film, but I was more and more intrigued by it as it went on. Mainly because the acting is quite good throughout. And it was interesting to see what was going to happen.

Now - as a side note - I do have a bone to pick with Letterboxd and how they have classified this film. In their "GENRE" tab under "THEMES" they have this film listed as both:

* "Noir And Dark Crime Dramas"
and
* "Emotional LGBTQ Relationships"

(a) Not a bit of the Film Noir subgenre is represented here.
(b) Not even close to Crime Drama here, much less DARK Crime Drama.
(c) No LGBTQ themes, characters or relationships are represented here.

What the hell is going on with these "Themes" listed on these film homepages. I get the feeling that Letterboxd has quite a few staffers who are either sleeping on the job, have no idea what Film Noir is, or are just lazy. I'm not sure what's going on. But this is just one of many, many films that I have seen badly mislabeled like this.

...sigh...
