***************

The opening credits featuring several beautiful western paintings underscored by grandiose western music is a PERFECT way to start a big ol' western story like this.

Similar to "RIO BRAVO" in many ways, this movie also centers on a trio of unlikely buddies played by John Wayne as the stalwart sharpshooter, Robert Mitchum as the drunkard sheriff, and James Caan as the knife-throwing young upstart.

The story is a bit sprawling over the two hours of screentime, showing several different adventures and conflicts that this trio runs into. They always seem to be butting heads against a big money rancher and his crew... and that eventually leads us to the climatic ending as well.

Director Howard Hawks has given us a film that is grand in scope, looks absolutely beautiful and is highly enjoyable. When you think of the "Western" genre, this is the kind of movie you are thinking about.
