Not too many countries can claim their highest grossing box office hit of all-time is one from the supernatural genre, except Thailand with director Bangjong Pisanthanakun's PEE MAK (พี่มากพระโขนง, Phi Mak Phra Khanong, 2013), another adaptation of the popular folklore story of Mae Nak Phra Khanon, or Nang Nak. The difference here, is the inclusion and focus on the comedy of the events, making it a fun counterpart to NANG NAK (นางนาก, 1999 - my review here), which took the story of ghostly love seriously. It's a subversive look at the legend, as Amber T. writes in her essay Mind Your Own Business: How Pee Mak subverts the Vengeful Female Ghost Story, “Pee Mak directly places the focus on her…
Mak and his friends return to his wife Nak, at his river village home. His friends soon discover that his wife is a ghost and attempt to warn Mak, without alerting Nak.
This is currently Thailand's highest grossing film and I wanted to see why. Comedy horror based on an adaptation of a Thai folklore legend, so a lot more impactful for Thai audiences, but may not translate as well globally.
The balance between the genres was consistent and the story was entertaining enough, but it felt too Scooby Doo at times. Plus all the guys constantly screaming got to be a bit much. They also use a lot of modern day (movie) references, which confused me, as this film…
idk why i watched this but i liked the guy with sexy ghost wife and his stupid friends
the long ending scene of the couple professing their love for each other... where is their oscar
A young man named Mak returns home from the war with his soldier friends to reunite with his wife Nak and his newborn baby boy. But after a while, each friend starts to notice something strange about Nak. It all leads to an uproarious comedy punctuated with sparsely scary vibes thorough, Thai style.
Based on a folk tale, I was surprised by how effortlessly it combined both horror and comedy, that even in its most outlandish moments, there was a sense of tension growing beneath the lighthearted surface.
The assured direction, the well-balanced scriptwriting, the traditional score, the comic timing, and chemistry between the actors is impeccable, resulting in an entertaining flick that one will love and laugh at the…
FUCKIN’ HILARIOUS!
Funny, creepy, and totally unique. This is how you do comedy horror right. Once you watch it, you’ll understand why this is Thailand’s most popular and iconic film. (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED)
And yeah honestly, if my wife won’t come back from the dead for me, I don’t want her.
Pee Mak’s irresistible good humor and touching love story between a husband and his ghost wife will charm anyone willing to give it a try.
It is never scary, but it is frequently laugh-out-loud funny and populated by characters who for the most part, we actually care about.
If you want to see something silly or just want to familiarize yourself with Thai films, this is a great choice!
My mom once told me, if you look between your legs you can see if there are any ghosts
OMG THE WHOLE GANG IS BACK!!!
Pee Mak is filled with slapstick humour, over the top "horror music" and a genuinely creepy atmosphere, you'll know in a few minutes that this is a Pisanthanakun movie. I love seeing Aey, Ter, Shin and Puak back together, their chemistry is so natural it's just like hanging out w/ friends. They really carried the whole movie I was in tears from laughing too much G O D I'm laughing just thinking about it now. It's just funny and cute overall would rec to everyone!
A very strong 4 3/4 stars out of 5 tbh
I'll say it again WHAT A GREAT YEAR FOR HORROR MOVIES
