I'm so glad I decided to pause on the new horror and watch some classics. This is a masterpiece and it's basically flawless.

To be clear, it's as strong as Suspiria and as ominously tense as Fulci but in a totally different manner. It would be fair to say this is objectively the best film of Argento's I've seen, but my love for Suspiria makes that difficult to acknowledge. The violence was almost sedate in comparison to the above, but it was realistic in a way that is at least as dread-inducing and has at least as much impact as extravagant and over-the-top gore. Given the choice, this is my preference—I'm not a gore person by nature, I'm just learning to enjoy it.

No wonder Argento made Hitchcock nervous. This is as good a thriller as Hitchcock's best, but wow it brings much more horror to the table. Several scenes here are unforgettable. The hole in the door, the blackened room towards the end, the gallery scenes. If you've seen it that will make sense.

I liked the Italian dub if you have a choice; I take it both English and Italian are recorded after and both original, but I tried English and the Italian is what I would suggest.
