Hooptober X Film #26 of 37
6 Countries - Japan
This was my most anticipated Hooptober watch for many reasons. I love J-horror, and Kiyoshi Kurosawa is a name I’ve had my eye on for some time now. Pulse got my attention a few months ago, which I have yet to see but will soon. Cure has been on my watchlist for a while. It took me about three tries in the period of 24 hours to watch this because I’ve been so tired lately. Tonight I was determined to watch it the whole way through without falling asleep, and I made it!
Cure was fantastic. J-horror is always doing so much different from America and that’s what I love about it. This movie has pretty much no jump scares or frightening imagery. It’s the sound design and atmosphere that makes it unsettling. There are moments when a harmless sound is able to make you jump a bit. It was an excellent choice and fills the film with moments of tension. The cinematography really gives this film an eerie atmosphere that fills you with a sort of dread throughout. A ton of dull colors that contrasts beautifully with the excellent long wide shots. There’s so much to love about this movie, and I’ll love it even more when I rewatch it. I think I’ve found a new love for crime thrillers in the past few months, and I’m excited for more Kiyoshi in the future
