Your Fat Friend

A great heartwarming, sincere and informative movie about author, fat activist and overall awesome person Aubrey Gordon. Jeanie Finlay crafts a very human story of the last 6 years of Gordon's life, from the time as she began her writing work anonymously under the moniker Your Fat Friend to her becoming a successful author and the co-host of popular podcast Maintenance Phase.

The movie is peppered with childhood home videos and interviews with Gordon's parents, who're struggling with the "fallout" from them parenting Aubrey according to the diet and body ideals of the time. The conversations between Gordon and her mother are genuinely touching and the acceptance that mistakes were made is both wonderful and cathartic.

In the end, Gordon's life is not glamourized and Finlay refrains from constructing a crescendoing narrative, wherein in the end everything is fine. In the end, Gordon still gets death threats for simply existing as a fat woman on the internet, still gets stares and comments, when she gets on a plane and our society is still extremely fatphobic.

Nonetheless Aubrey Gordon is a shining light in the fight against the cruel ideas of a diet culture that society is still eager to embrace. One debunking - one book and essay - at a time, she makes the world just a little bit brighter and safer for all fat people.
