This list is not intended to be "complete", but instead aims to provide a catalog of works any short-film enthusiast should have seen. It accounts for shorts from all eras, and tries to direct attention towards a plethora of different styles. From traditional, and somewhat simplistic pencil drawings from the 70s, over Mirai Mizue's idiosyncratic, Fischinger/McLaren inspired water-color style of the 10s, all the way to Kawamoto's and Murata's timeless stop-motion animation.
Not ranked, but partially sorted by artist, type of animation, era, anthologies etc.
