Oh wow, this was surprisingly good!
The Neighbors is tense, haunting, consistently engaging, and unexpectedly touching, with a narrative underpinned by sorrow that's lodged in grief, guilt, and especially fear.
The movie revolves around several residents of an apartment building who live in fear after a young girl is murdered. Gradually, suspicions arise that one of the residents may be the killer. As mistrust and evidence of something fishy being afoot mounts, the killer works to cover his tracks while planning to take one more victim before escaping...
Ok, three things:
1️⃣ This movie has one of the more effective uses of "non-horror" ghosts that I've ever seen. I think that this supernatural element--which is essentially a manifestation of guilt…
My dead daughter has been coming home for a week
Local neighbourhood creepy dude serial killer thriller with lingering horror elements, wedged between 10 other stories. Would have been fine if this were a mini-series, but for 115mins, a lot of it becomes excess baggage.
With the endless assortment of community characters chewing up the runtime of an already interesting premise, it really only works if any of them interest the viewer.
Ma Dong-seok, Kim Sae-ron and Kim Yunjim were standouts for me, while the rest were just there.
The collective involvement of everyone within the community lead to a satisfying conclusion, but we didn't really need to delve into all of their life stories.
Another film I had fond memories of upon discovery, but can't score it based on nostalgia.
Barely able to control his impulses, a serial killer still manages to run up a decent bodycount in his own backyard... largely due to the immediate community's civic pride being crippled by doubt, indifference and conflicted interest. You'll probably come to this for a pre-fame Ma Dong-seok as loan shark the tenants association is hoping gets locked up for the initial murder - but its a rich ensemble with Kim Sung-kyun's killer, Yunjin Kim's grieving stepmother, Chun Ho-jin's haunted security guard, and Jang Young-nam's site manager - all chewing up the scenery.
The Neighbours is wonderful - to the point where I'm probably going to track down the Kang Full Webtoon its adapted from..... which is saying a lot, as I really dislike webtoons.
The Neighbors is a South Korean thriller set in a middle class apartment complex that boasts a great ensemble cast led by the at the time 12 years old Kim Sae-Ron in a double role.
The opening sees her first role, the middle school student Yeo-Seon, not getting picked up after a late class by her stepmother. She starts going home by foot, a car stops near her, she enters and I guess we all know what that means for her.
10 days later the police finds her dead body and we see the stepmother Gyung-Hee, played by Kim Yunjin of LOST fame, blaming herself for the death of her stepdaughter.
Other highlights include Ma Dong Seok (The Five, The…
Solid serial killer procedural that rather than focusing on the act itself, or the police investigation, revolves around the effect it has on the immediate community and how they piece whats happening under their noses. Great ensemble cast carries it though the direction is a little amateurish at times, especially with some odd shot choices, but overall this is a decent addition to the genre, particularly if you're looking for something a little different.
I liked it, but goddamned it was stressful.
Murder, mystery, spookiness and high tension. A good cocktail for a strong thriller.
Brilliant cast - massive props to Kim Sae-ron. Damn that girl has talent.
As thrilling as ever, with its truly delightful game of cat and mouse and an amazing ensemble cast. Kim Sae-ron in a double role is still the mvp and you should stop reading this and just go and watch the film.
Solid thriller based on a web toon. Couldnhave done without the very minor supernatural side to it.
The Neighbors is about an apartment building that is harboring a very sloppy serial killer and the residents all have their suspicions along with reservations about alerting anyone. Its melodramatic, it's dark and Don Lee turns up to throw a few punches here and there.
Academy Award goes to free pizza.
The Neighbors is a slow-building drama with thriller elements woven throughout. I thought the story was absorbing and the characters felt believable, even if the movie tried to pack in more side plots and backstories than it had time to fully explore. That didn’t really bother me, though. I tend to be long-winded myself, so maybe I just related to its pacing and structure.
Yunjim Kim (Lost, Seven Days) gave a heartfelt performance as Kyung-hee, a grieving mother trying to make sense of her loss. Ma Dong-seok (Train to Busan, The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil) was perfectly cast as Ahn Hyuk-mo, the no-nonsense tough guy of the neighborhood with a strong moral compass. While it’s not the most action-packed…
Apartment ensemble melodrama that happens to be about that ensemble realizing one of the residents is a serial killer. A lot of threads that are very slowly pulled towards taut nerve-wracking suspense and confrontations in the second half. Yunjin Kim provides a sympathetic anchor as a grieving mother haunted by her dead daughter. Kim Sung Kyun is wholly convincing as the awkward murdering creep. And this Ma Dong Seok guy is scene-stealing magnetic as the local loan shark; yes, those one-&-done punches and open-hand slaps are indeed present
Overall, a decent drama that segues into several tense sequences, especially its crescendoing climax
