This is a pretty well made little indie horror film with some frustrating things that keep it from being great. It’s got a terrific folk horror story about a pit that keeps a rural backwater area safe from harm as long as it gets a regular sacrifice. It picks the sacrifice by sending I guess a telepathic message to a local potter who makes a jug with the victim’s face on it. I can’t say that I enjoyed some of the probably frighteningly accurate ways of these mountain people, but I liked that the film didn’t shy away from showing how things are probably done in a place with no education, medical care, etc.
Laura Ashley Carter does a great…
This is actually just kinda sad (but it was almost ruined by a certain somebody that can’t do an Appalachian accent)
As an Appalachian, I can tell you the pit was unnecessary. Any plastic nativity scene baby Jesus would've been enough for them to start a cult with.
5/10

A young girl in an old backwoods community ends up pregnant with her brothers child and discovers she is to be sacrificed to a creature in a pit out in the woods.
A slow burner of a film that i really enjoyed. The central premise of ancient custom and folklore is nicely explored and the idea that when a face is created on a clay jug then that person should be sacrificed to an ancient creature is quite Lovecraftian in it's execution.
The film is clearly low budget yet is so small scale you don't really notice. Larry Fessenden, the director of Wendigo and The Last Winter is one of the actors here (Sean Young also co-stars), but due to…
i like the premise and there were some very good performances, but this wasn't very engaging and definitely didn't reach its full potential
Ada has a secret and it has something to do with her brother. When the time comes for her sacrifice to the pit she hides the evidence and tries to live her life as normal. At least that's her wish. The reality is that nothing in Ada's life is normal anymore and it's just a matter of time before the pit corrects the imbalance she's caused. In the end the pit always gets what it wants.
Jug Face fits into a category of horror films that I watched on Netflix in the early - mid 2010s. Some were underrated gems and some were awful. All were around during a time when Netflix had a decent catalog of under the radar…
