I don’t know what’s worse: the fact that this is so fucking heartbreaking and stomach turning, the fact that this is a true story, or the fact that this is still happening to this day. All cops are fucking bastards.

Ryan Coogler, a film school graduate and native of the Bay area, has crafted one of the most powerful and important debut films I've ever experienced. It chronicles the last day in the life of Oscar Grant, a young man who was quick to anger, capable of massive amounts of love and devotion, and treated strangers with kindness and respect. He wasn't just a good person: he was a real person who was a vital part of several peoples' lives. I've seen a lot of tragedies, biopics, and social issue dramas. This is one of the very, very, VERY few occasions where you can use the term "mise-en-scène" without coming off as pretentious. Because let me tell you, the mise-en-scène here (*strokes goatee*) is TREMENDOUS.
In all seriousness, I haven’t experienced something this authentic and full of beautiful love in quite some time. Every scene is 100% important to knowing the character of Oscar Grant, and knowing the character of Oscar Grant is 100% important to how we experience life as a whole after watching the movie. Recommendable on the basis of the strong performances, and not much else. My wife put it very well. "If this is really how this guy's last day went down," she said as we walked out of the theater, "then he had the last day-iest last day of all time."
The foreshadowing in this movie quickly escalates from ominous to almost laughable. Every scene ends with an ironic button of a BART train rumbling through the background or a character cheerfully and obliviously yelling "Happy new year!" or our doomed protagonist telling his daughter he's going to be "just fine." You could trim this movie by maybe 2 minutes, just cutting out all these moments, and instantly make the film at least a half-star better.
Michael B. Jordan gives the best male performance I've seen all year. Actually best performance all year period. The whole supporting cast was also outstanding. I felt similar emotions after watching this that I had after my watch of Dear Zachary. Both sadness and anger. Just writing this now is almost causing me to tear up.

“Fruitvale Station” leaves you completely empty inside. It tackles its subject, police brutality, with a tenderness and emotional depth that you can’t look away! You follow the struggle Oscar, an ordinary guy who is a great father and trying to become someone his girlfriend deserves. He isn’t perfect but he deeply cares about everyone around him. Cooglers choice to focus mainly about the relationship between Oscar and his friends and family is a great one. The scene where Oscar gets killed by a police officer.
