This is going to be a bit of a weird month for me, because I'm playing along with Blank Check March Madness ( twitter.com/blankcheckpod/status/1233252299818008581?s=20 ). My list is bent around fitting in as many of those directors as possible. Should be fun!
The tasks, should you choose to participate are:
1. Today is my sister's birthday. She's been nice enough to introduce me to my latest interest, Impractical Jokers, so in honor of her watch any movie starring someone from Staten Island. Bonus points if you watch Impractical Jokers: The Movie for this task.
2. On February 29, John Mulaney hosted SNL for the third time, with David Byrne as the musical guest. Additionally, a year ago, today, John Mulaney hosted SNL for the second time and Bill Hader made a special cameo appearance. Watch a film starring someone who was a castmember on SNL during the time when John Mulaney was a writer (2008-2013).
3. Watch a movie that either features David Byrne as an actor or one in which the music was composed by David Byrne. Alternatively, watch a film featuring a Talking Heads song.
4. Bill Hader is one of my favorite actors currently working. He is also a cinephile himself. Watch any film that Bill Hader has recommended. (this list is pretty exhaustive but if you come across an article where he recommends something else you can use it as long as you link the rec [so I can add it to my list lol]).
5. A whole wealth of actors were born and raised in the Pittsburgh area: Michael Keaton, Jeff Goldblum, F. Murray Abraham, the list goes on and on. Watch a film starring any actor or actress from Pittsburgh, PA
6. While a lot of actors are from Pittsburgh, I am not. I was raised in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, known for being kind of close to Scranton and being mentioned on The Office multiple times. Either watch a film directed by Joseph Manckiewiz, who was born in Wilkes-Barre, or watch a film that has referenced the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area. (Here’s a website to help you in your search, you can also watch The Irishman because Pittston is right next door).
7. I went to NYU so watch any film directed by or starring someone who went to NYU.
8. Watch a documentary that was spoofed in Documentary Now!
9. Shortly after I first joined Letterboxd, I became extremely obsessed with Frank Sinatra. In honor of the two and a half years that I've loved him, watch any film that Frank Sinatra starred in.
10. Today is Jon Hamm's birthday, watch a film featuring an actor who appeared on Mad Men.
11. I have a degree in history so watch any film that dramatizes a moment or event in history.
12. I also have a degree in politics so watch any political documentary.
13. One of my first huge obsessions was The Beatles. George Harrison has always been my favorite Beatle so, in honor of him, watch any film made by George Harrison's production company, HandMade Films. Bonus points if you choose one that George was actually a producer on.
14. I feel like part of the soundtrack to every American my age's life is made up partially of tracks by The Lonely Island. Weird because they're a comedy troupe, but isn't that part of what makes it fun? Watch any movie that stars, is written by, directed by, or produced by a member of the Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, Jorma Taccone).
15. Comedy is and has always been, my favorite genre. Watch a comedy that was released before 1970.
16. Lawyers are often seen as the ultimate narcissists, which must be why I'm in school to become one right now! Watch a film featuring a lawyer.
17. We love a hot Hollywood couple. Watch a film directed by Noah Baumbach or one starring or directed by Greta Gerwig.
18. Seth Rogen and Judd Apatow comedies defined my late childhood/early teenhood. In honor of them,watch a bro-comedy that was released in the 2000s.
19. Spring officially starts today in the Northern Hemisphere, watch a film that you think best represents any season.
20. Before there was my obsession with the Beatles, there was Harry Potter, an obsession that lasted well over a decade. Watch any film starring an actor who got their start in one of the Harry Potter films.
21. Watch any film that you didn't think you would like when you first heard of it but now think you might enjoy.
22. Watch a film directed by the Coen Brothers if you've seen them all (and don't want to rewatch one) watch a film starring one of their frequent stars.
23. The 1970s are one of my favorite decades in film and my highest rated decade on Letterboxd. Watch any film released during the 1970s.
24. In case you can't tell from... everything about me... I also love television. One of my favorite tv shows is The Sopranos. Watch a movie starring someone who was in the main cast of The Sopranos.
25. Edgar Wright's Cornetto Trilogy helped shape my taste in comedy. Watch one of Edgar Wright's 1000 Favorite Films.
26. Today is my friend Liz's half-birthday, her favorite actor is Adam Driver. In honor of Liz, watch a film starring Adam Driver.
27. I love going to the cinema and fiscally supporting the film industry. Watch a movie that's in theaters this month.
28. Jimmy Stewart is perhaps the most famous Pennsylvanian in the world of film. Watch any movie that stars Jimmy Stewart.
29. Watch a movie directed by or starring Taika Waititi. If you’ve seen all of his films either rewatch one or watch a film from New Zealand.
30. This is the 60th Letterboxd Scavenger Hunt so watch a movie starring someone who is turning 60 this year or a movie that came out 60 years ago in 1960.
31. Since I love Bill Hader so much, I couldn't put just one Bill Hader task on this list. Watch any film starring Bill
